Appleton Thorn

None

Rural village on outskirts of Warrington and home to the Amazing Maize Maze - a popular visitor attraction for all ages.

Appleton - described in the Domesday Book to mean the town where apples grew. Appleton once was the main supplier of water to Warrington, which lasted more than 100 years.

The only village in England where the 'Bawming of the Thorn' ceremony takes place. The thorn tree, which stands beside the church, is believed to be an offshoot for the Glastonbury thorn, which grew from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea. Bawming, which means decorating the tree with flowers and ribbons, takes place very year in the village, when local children sing and dance.
