Stretton

None

The small community of Stretton lies between the Appleton Thorn to Daresbury road, south of Warrington.

The name of the settlement probably derives from the Old English 'straettun' meaning 'a tun on a Roman road'.

The sandstone church of St Matthew, 1870, was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott to replace a Commissioners church of 1826-7. The early English style tower, nave and aisles were probably the work of Scott. The church clock face was refurbished in 1963.
