The village is recorded as early as the 12th century but grew from the purchasing of the estate by Greenalls, a local brewing family, when the hall, church and school were built along with many dwellings.
The church of St John the Evangelist, likened to a small cathedral, was built at a cost of £10,000 and was consecrated in 1885. Decorated in Gothic style, it is built of Cheshire red sandstone. The spire forms a conspicuous feature of the landscape for some distance. The church contains some fine stained glass windows and a superb reredos of oak.
